Lesson 5 - Chord Sequences 2

In the previous two lessons, we looked at chords A major, C major, D major, E major and G major. To continue with this lesson, you need to know these chords.

Its worth refering back to it every now and again to jog your memory.

And Remember, take the lessons at your own speed, there is no rush, good luck!

What's involved in this lesson?

This lesson explores chord sequences using both minor and major chords. We also look at chord sequences that are more complicated.

Contents:

Chord Sequence 1
Chord Sequence 2
Chord Sequence 3
Summary

Chord Sequence 1

The first chord sequence uses chords C, Em, G and D. It is just like the chord sequences you learnt in lesson 3 but using some different chords.

Remember there are 4 strums to each bar (one on each beat).

4/4 || C | Em | G | D ||

Chord Sequence 2

Using chords Dm, G major, Em and Am I have put together a 2 bar chord sequence. You may notice that all of the bars contain two chords. For each bar you play the first chord for two strums, and then the second chord for two strums. A bit more challenging, but with practice you'll be fine. Remember to take it slow at first and speed up as your confidence grows.

4/4 || Dm G | Em Am ||

Chord Sequence 3

Using chords Am, D major, C major and G major I have put together a 4 bar chord sequence. You may notice that the last bar has three chords. For this bar you play the first chord for two strums, and then the second chord for one strum, and the third for one strum. Just take it slow and speed up as you become more confident. (I've provided a little help with the counting).

(G)1.. 2.. (D)3.. 4.. (Am)1.. 2.. 3.. 4.. (G)1.. 2.. (D)3.. 4.. (Am)1.. 2.. (C)3.. (D)4..

4/4 || G D | Am | G D | Am , C D ||

So, to summarise:

  • Keep practising these chords sequences and you could even make up some of your own! Why not!
  • Play through the chord sequences, practise them at a slow tempo (speed) and try to bring the tempo up as you become more confident.
  • If you hear dead notes, remember the techniques from the first two lessons, these will help you.

When you feel you have played these chords till your heart's content and you're happy with you're progress, take a look at lesson 6.
